General
Veterinary costs typically include vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchip
along with boarding costs prior to entering the program. These costs vary but
generally approach between $400 and $500. Special surgery needs are
uncommon but occur and add to the cost. Under supplies and equipment there
are cleaning supplies, food, treats, harness/collar/leash, chew (we use a 3 color
system, red/yellow/green harnesses and collars) chew proof beds. A library is also
maintained by New Hope. It includes dog training books and personal growth
reading for the trainers. Depending on the length of stay by a dog costs approach
$700+. We are fortunate the Oregon Department of Corrections PRCF covers
trainers pay (PRAS)
Yes. Volunteers overseeing the dog program require a back ground check and a good deal of annual training completed online. Volunteering involves much the same training as trainers receive and a gained familiarity with policies and procedures steering daily operations. Strong interpersonal skills are desirable in working with the team of trainers and prison staff. Dog walkers at New Hope’s holding facility across the street is also a need with less training required. And there is always room on New Hope’s Board of Directors for a volunteer. The Board meets 4 to 5 times annually.
